What is classed as a dental emergency?

At Smile Rooms Milton Keynes, we regard a dental emergency as anything that’s causing you pain or distress. This could be bleeding, or swelling, a chipped or cracked tooth, or a tooth that’s been knocked out. If you’re experiencing toothache or pain, loose teeth, soft tissue injuries, loose veneers, wisdom tooth pain or even broken wires on your braces, don’t waste any time; give our team a call and we’ll see you as soon as possible.

Even if you’re not sure if your issue is a dental emergency, please do call us – as it’s always better to exercise caution in case what you believe is a minor dental issue develops into something more significant.

What should I do about my dental emergency?

We always recommend that you ring us for an urgent appointment – but we also have some advice for anyone with any dental issues.

If you’ve knocked out or chipped a tooth, you should first seek medical advice from your doctor or A&E. If you’re able to, save your knocked-out tooth and keep it in some milk to take to your emergency dental appointment. If possible, save any pieces from a chipped tooth and bring these with you. You should also rinse your mouth out with some water, before applying a cold compress if you’re suffering from any pain.

If your dental issue is toothache, our advice is to take Ibuprofen to deal with the pain. It’s vital you always seek medical advice before doing so, though. Applying a cold compress will also help manage any swelling.

What do I do about an abscess?

Have an abscess? Painkillers may help if you have any pain, but again, always seek medical advice first. You can also rinse your mouth in saltwater, which should help relieve any pain you’re experiencing.

Lost a crown? Paracetemol may help you better deal with the pain – always check with a pharmacist or doctor first, though – and avoid hot or cold drinks, too. If possible, take the crown with you to your emergency dental appointment.

If your problem is a lost filling, paracetemol will help you deal with any pain – but the advice is the same: always speak to a pharmacist or doctor first. Avoid hot or cold drinks, too – and chat to your chemist about purchasing some temporary filling material, which will help until you visit us for your emergency dental appointment.

Out-of-hours emergency dental care?

If you have an urgent dental problem, you should call your own dentist. If you are unable to find a dentist who is able to see you or if cannot contact your own dentist because they are closed, you can contact NHS 111 by phoning 111.
